Younger Canadians Express Pessimism About Country's Future

According to a new Angus Reid poll, younger Canadians are significantly less optimistic about the future of Canada than their older counterparts. While at least half of Canadians of all ages express optimism, 68% of those aged 64 and older are optimistic, compared to only 39% of those aged 35 to 44, who are the most likely to be pessimistic.

Party Affiliation Shapes Outlook

The poll reveals that party affiliation strongly influences satisfaction with the nation's direction. "Those who voted Conservative in last year's federal election are more pessimistic (55%) than optimistic (38%)," the Angus Reid poll stated. In contrast, 82% of past Liberal voters and 67% of past NDP voters say they are optimistic about Canada's future as a united country. Among Bloc Québécois voters, 43% are pessimistic and 30% are optimistic.

National Unity Faces Tests

National unity is set to be challenged during a pivotal fall, with both a Quebec provincial election and an Alberta referendum on the calendar. Fewer than one in five Canadians (17%) believe separatism will fade in Alberta and Quebec over time. Most view the movements either as a reflection of "serious regional frustration" (36%) or as a "fundamental problem" for Canada's national unity (36%).

External Pressures and National Pride

The poll notes that national pride is influenced by developments south of the border. "For the second straight year at this time, Canada is under pressure externally with economic sanctions and threats of annexation from U.S. President Donald Trump, that perhaps leave many with lingering questions about what the future of Canada may look like," the poll said. Despite these pressures, 58% of Canadians say they are optimistic about "the future of Canada as a united country," nearly double the number who are pessimistic.

Provincial Variations in Optimism

Optimism varies by province. "Those in Saskatchewan (48%), Alberta (50%) and Quebec (51%) are the least optimistic about the country's future as a unified entity," the poll said. Alberta and Saskatchewan are also the most pessimistic, with 43% in each province expressing pessimism. Quebec shows more uncertainty at 17%. Optimism is highest in Newfoundland and Labrador at 72%.
