Blue Jays Shut Out 3-0 by Mets, Guerrero Jr. Sits

The Toronto Blue Jays were shut out for the fourth time this season, falling 3-0 to the New York Mets at Rogers Centre on Tuesday. The loss dropped the Blue Jays to 40-46, completing a June in which they went 11-15. The Mets improved to 36-50.

Gausman Solid but Offense Stalls

Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman delivered a strong outing, allowing just one run on a Francisco Alvarez home run in the fifth inning. Gausman struck out seven batters over six innings, his most in his past three starts, and threw 96 pitches. The Mets took a 1-0 lead on Alvarez's solo shot to deep centre.

Despite Gausman's performance, the Blue Jays could not push any runs across the plate. The Mets' starter, Nolan McLean, threw six scoreless innings, limiting Toronto's offense. The Blue Jays managed only two runs in Monday's 2-1 win, which snapped a six-game losing streak.

Bo Bichette Returns, Guerrero Jr. Sits

Former Blue Jay Bo Bichette made his return to Toronto, drawing much attention. He recorded his first hit against his former team with a single in the fourth inning, after going hitless in his previous five at-bats this series. Bichette also impressed defensively at third base. In the fifth inning, with runners on first and second and two outs, Bichette chased a pitch well outside the zone and lined out to right field, ending the inning. The Mets had gone 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position following that out.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was not available for the game due to nagging back issues. Guerrero has struggled with power, recording only four extra-base hits in June, including one home run. He has not hit a home run at home all season. Guerrero appeared in 23 games in June, with five multi-hit games. Fans have expressed frustration, with some booing after an 0-for-5 performance on Saturday.

Corbin Moved to Bullpen

Veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin was moved to the bullpen ahead of Tuesday's game, as announced by manager John Schneider. Corbin, signed for $1 million, had exceeded expectations but struggled in June. The Blue Jays now need a fifth starter to complement Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber. Max Scherzer, when healthy, could fill the role. Simeon Woods Richardson cleared waivers after being designated for assignment, and Jake Bloss has yet to make his Blue Jays debut. No starter has been named for Canada Day, but Spencer Miles is expected to play a role. An opener is likely for Wednesday.

Up Next

The Blue Jays will wear their traditional red jerseys for the Canada Day game on Wednesday at 3:07 p.m., wrapping up the season-long 10-game home stand. The Mets will start right-hander Freddy Peralta. The Blue Jays will not play at home again until after the all-star break.
