The Ottawa Senators have secured veteran center Nick Cousins with a two-year contract extension, the team announced on Canada Day. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $1.5 million, keeps Cousins in Ottawa through the 2027-28 season.
Contract Details and Performance
Cousins, 32, recorded 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 68 games last season, adding grit and playoff experience to the Senators' forward group. The native of Belleville, Ontario, has 96 goals and 148 assists for 244 points in 666 career NHL games over 11 seasons with the Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, and Philadelphia Flyers.
"Nick brings a hard-nosed style and veteran leadership that complements our young core," said Senators general manager Steve Staios in a statement. "His versatility allows him to play up and down the lineup, and we're thrilled to have him continue with our group."
Role and Impact
Cousins has carved out a reputation as a reliable bottom-six forward who can kill penalties and agitate opponents. Last season, he averaged 13:42 of ice time per game and posted a 49.6% faceoff win rate. His physical play—he delivered 112 hits—and willingness to drop the gloves make him a valuable piece for a team aiming to return to the playoffs.
"Ottawa is a great fit for me and my family," Cousins said. "We've built something special here, and I'm excited to be part of it for two more years."
Senators' Offseason Moves
The extension comes as the Senators prepare for the opening of NHL free agency. Ottawa has roughly $8 million in cap space and is expected to target a top-four defenseman and a scoring winger to bolster a roster that finished fifth in the Atlantic Division last season with 87 points.
Cousins' signing adds depth to a forward group led by captain Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stützle, and Josh Norris. The Senators also have restricted free agent Shane Pinto to re-sign, though the team has expressed confidence in retaining the young center.
