The Ottawa Senators announced on July 1, 2026, that they have signed center Nick Cousins and goaltender Samuel Ersson to two-year contracts. The moves come as the team looks to bolster its lineup for the upcoming NHL season.
Nick Cousins brings veteran presence
Nick Cousins, 33, joins the Senators after spending the previous season with the Anaheim Ducks. He recorded 12 goals and 18 assists in 74 games last season, providing a solid two-way presence at center. Cousins is known for his physical play and ability to contribute offensively.
“Nick is a hard-working player who brings experience and grit to our lineup,” said Senators general manager Steve Staios in a statement. “We’re excited to have him on board for the next two years.”
Samuel Ersson adds goaltending depth
Samuel Ersson, 26, has signed a two-year deal after a strong season with the Philadelphia Flyers, where he posted a 2.89 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 40 games. The Swedish goaltender is expected to compete for the backup position behind starter Anton Forsberg.
“Samuel is a talented young goaltender with a lot of potential,” Staios added. “We believe he can develop into a key part of our team.”
Impact on Senators roster
The signings address key areas for Ottawa as they aim to improve on a 2025-26 season where they finished with a 38-34-10 record, missing the playoffs by six points. Cousins will likely slot into the third-line center role, while Ersson provides insurance in net after the departure of backup Kevin Mandolese.
Financial terms of the contracts were not disclosed, but both deals are believed to be in the range of $1.5 million to $2 million per season, according to sources close to the team.
