Dickinson and Rogers Place Deliver Memorable Performance in Oilers' Playoff Opener

After a five-year absence from postseason hockey, Jason Dickinson made his return count in spectacular fashion. The Edmonton Oilers forward scored two crucial goals to lead his team to a Game 1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Place on Monday night, April 20, 2026.

A Long-Awaited Return to Playoff Hockey

Dickinson hadn't experienced playoff action since the 2019-20 season when his Dallas Stars reached the Stanley Cup Final. That experience was diminished by empty arenas during the pandemic, making Monday night's atmosphere particularly meaningful for the 30-year-old forward.

"I had to take a couple of deep breaths during the anthem to centre myself and come back down to earth because the adrenaline was just pumping," Dickinson confessed. "I was feeling every bit of energy in that arena. It was amazing."

The Rogers Place Atmosphere

The Edmonton crowd, having endured 41 regular-season home games while anticipating the real competition, unleashed pent-up energy that created what players describe as a unique NHL playoff environment. Dickinson had heard stories about Edmonton's spring hockey atmosphere but admitted television couldn't capture the reality.

"In my mind there was no way I was not playing," said Dickinson, who overcame an ankle injury that kept him out of the final three regular-season games. "Whatever I had to do I was going to be out there. I got a taste of playoffs years ago and, man, is it fun. It's the best time of year. You fight all year for this."

Learning to Appreciate Playoff Opportunities

Like many NHL players, Dickinson made the playoffs early in his career during his first two full seasons and assumed postseason appearances would become routine. The subsequent five-year absence taught him a valuable lesson about appreciating these opportunities.

"I was told early on that you have to savour it because you never know if you'll be back," Dickinson recalled. "I kind of chuckled at that. I was like 'Oh yeah, I'll be back. I'll be back.' And then five years went by and I hadn't seen playoffs."

Key Addition at Trade Deadline

The Oilers acquired Dickinson at the trade deadline primarily to strengthen their third line for the postseason. While management expected solid defensive play and depth scoring, two game-changing goals in his first playoff appearance with the team exceeded all expectations.

The victory sets a positive tone for Edmonton's playoff run as they seek to build on last season's success. Dickinson's performance, combined with the electric atmosphere at Rogers Place, created what players described as a "harmonic convergence" of player performance and fan energy that left both sides exhilarated.

As the Oilers prepare for Game 2, Dickinson's experience serves as a reminder to teammates and fans alike about the precious nature of playoff hockey and the importance of seizing every opportunity when it arrives.
