Warren Foegele's Ottawa Senators Debut Arrives in Seattle

The veteran NHL winger, recently acquired from the Los Angeles Kings, made his first appearance for the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. Foegele's transition to his new club came swiftly after the trade was finalized on Thursday, leaving him little time to adjust before taking the ice in Seattle.

A Swift Transition to New Opportunities

Warren Foegele described the past forty-eight hours as "pretty wild," expressing gratitude for his time with the Kings while embracing the fresh start with Ottawa. "Loved my time in L.A. Just a great group of guys there, and I had a lot of fun. I'm going to miss them, but I'm super-excited for this new opportunity," Foegele stated before the game. He arrived in Seattle on Friday and participated in his first skate with Senators teammates on Saturday morning, quickly integrating into the team's dynamics.

The winger noted that Ottawa's playing style resonates with his roots from his Carolina Hurricanes days, suggesting it aligns well with his personal approach to the game. "The guys here seem great, and, just watching some games, I think it's a style that brings me back to my roots, just from playing in Carolina. It fits the mould of the player that I am," he explained.

On-Ice Role and Performance Expectations

During Saturday's morning skate, Foegele was positioned on the left side of the fourth line alongside centre Lars Eller and right-winger Fabian Zetterlund. This lineup adjustment meant rookie forward Stephen Halliday would be scratched for the second consecutive game, while Kurtis MacDermid returned to the press box after dressing for Thursday night's match in Calgary.

Foegele brings a valuable element of speed to the Senators, who perform best when playing quickly. However, his recent season statistics with the Kings have been challenging, with only seven goals and two assists for nine points across forty-seven games during the 2025-26 campaign. These numbers contributed to his expendability in Los Angeles, but Ottawa sees potential for revival.

"I just try to use my speed, and I try to play north-south," Foegele emphasized. "I try to be reliable, and I take a lot of pride in being a 200-foot player, just doing anything I can to help the team win." This fresh start offers him a chance to rebound, especially with another year remaining on his contract at $3.5 million U.S.

Familiar Faces in the Dressing Room

Despite the rapid change, Foegele did not enter a completely unfamiliar environment. He already had connections within the Ottawa dressing room, including:

  • Defenceman Jordan Spence, a former teammate from their time together with the Kings.
  • Winger Michael Amadio, who shares the same Toronto-based agent, Joe Resnick.
  • Centre Dylan Cozens, whom Foegele spent time with in Muskoka last summer.

Spence recounted receiving a cryptic text from Foegele on Thursday with a "wink" emoji, which initially confused him until he realized the trade had occurred. "I was taking a pregame nap, and he texted me, and it was just kind of a winky face, and I was really confused. I'd never gotten a text like that before from (Foegele). Once I realized he got traded here, I was really pumped," Spence shared. The two have built a strong relationship, including Spence attending Foegele's wedding last summer and spending considerable time together on road trips during their Kings tenure.

From Markham, Ontario, Foegele expressed excitement about returning to play for an Ontario-based team, adding a personal touch to his professional move. As the Senators aim for a playoff push, Foegele's debut marks a significant step in his career and the team's strategy for the season ahead.
