Huskies Wrestling Team Reclaims Canada West Crown in Dominant Performance

The Saskatchewan Huskies men's wrestling program has returned to the pinnacle of Canada West competition, capturing their seventh conference banner at the championships over the weekend. The team accumulated 47 points to unseat the multi-time defending champion Alberta Golden Bears, marking a significant achievement for the program.

Individual Champions Lead the Way

Five Huskies wrestlers claimed gold medals in their respective weight classes: Yuel Kebrom (61 kilograms), Donovan Neudorf (65 kg), Nathan Kowal (68 kg), Takis Sembalerus (72 kg), and Matthew Yong (100 kg). Their performances were instrumental in securing the team championship.

On the women's side, Saskatchewan finished third overall with 34 points. Myah Phillips earned the team's lone gold medal in the 83-kilogram category, demonstrating strong individual performance despite the team's third-place finish.

Conference Awards Recognize Excellence

Canada West awards were distributed at the championships, with several Huskies receiving recognition. Yuel Kebrom was named men's rookie of the year, Donovan Neudorf received the men's student-athlete community service award, and Daniel Olver was honored as men's coach of the year.

The wrestling team now looks ahead to the U Sports Championships scheduled for February 27-28 in Thunder Bay, where they will compete against the nation's best collegiate wrestlers.

Basketball Team Advances to Canada West Semifinals

The Huskies women's basketball team secured a decisive 96-58 victory over the visiting Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West quarterfinal action on Saturday night. Maya Flindall led the offensive charge with a game-high 22 points, propelling Saskatchewan to a dominant performance.

The Cascades had earned their quarterfinal berth by defeating the Mount Royal Cougars 78-60 in a play-in match hosted at the University of Saskatchewan the previous night.

With this victory, the Huskies advance to host a Canada West semifinal matchup against the Calgary Dinos on February 21 at 7 p.m. at the Physical Activity Complex. The winner will move on to the Canada West championship the following week.

Volleyball Team Secures Playoff Position

The Huskies women's volleyball team concluded their regular season with a pair of 3-1 victories over provincial rivals, the Regina Cougars. These wins improved Saskatchewan's record to 12-8, earning them sixth place in the Canada West standings as the regular season concludes.

On Friday, Rosetta Cyr led the team with 15 kills as Saskatchewan dropped the first set 22-25 but rallied to win the next three sets 27-25, 25-16, and 25-18. The following night followed a similar pattern, with the Huskies losing the opening set 23-25 before winning three consecutive sets 25-21, 25-12, and 25-19. Jessica Bergstrom recorded 11 kills to lead the team in that contest.

Saskatchewan's sixth-place finish earns them a first-round bye to the Canada West quarterfinals, where they will face the No. 3 Trinity Western Spartans in a best-of-three series from February 27 to March 1 in Langley.

Meanwhile, the men's volleyball team had a bye week before hosting the Calgary Dinos in a best-of-three play-in series from February 19-21.

Hockey Team Concludes Regular Season

The Huskies men's hockey team will finish the Canada West regular season in second place in the East Division standings after suffering two losses to the host Mount Royal Cougars over the weekend. The Cougars will finish first in the division, setting the stage for playoff positioning as postseason competition approaches.

The weekend's action across multiple sports demonstrates the intensity of playoff competition as teams position themselves for postseason success. The Saskatchewan Huskies programs showed both individual excellence and team determination across wrestling, basketball, volleyball, and hockey.
