Senators' Kleven Nearing Return from Broken Jaw for Crucial Game 3 Against Hurricanes
The Ottawa Senators are exploring lineup adjustments as they prepare for a pivotal Game 3 in their first-round NHL playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes. Head coach Travis Green is evaluating potential changes ahead of Thursday night's contest at Canadian Tire Centre, with the team trailing 2-0 in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup series.
Kleven's Recovery Progress
Defenseman Tyler Kleven, who suffered a broken jaw when struck by a puck during an April 2 regular-season game against the Buffalo Sabres, took significant steps toward returning to action. The big blueliner participated fully in Wednesday's optional skate after shedding his non-contact jersey earlier in the week, indicating he is closing in on medical clearance to play.
"He's getting closer," Green stated regarding Kleven's status. When asked if Kleven might appear in Game 3, Green responded, "I'm not sure yet." Kleven was not available to media on Wednesday, which is typical during playoff periods when lineup decisions are closely guarded.
Potential Defensive Shakeup
Kleven's potential return would provide a substantial physical presence to Ottawa's defensive corps, which has been missing both Kleven and injured defenseman Artem Zub. Zub was hurt in Game 1 after colliding with Carolina's Seth Jarvis and has not participated in practices since, making his return unlikely for the immediate future.
Green acknowledged that Zub could potentially return later in the series but emphasized the player would need to practice first. In the meantime, the Senators have relied heavily on top defensemen Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot, both of whom exceeded 40 minutes of ice time during the double-overtime loss in Game 2.
Other Roster Considerations
Beyond Kleven's possible return, Green is considering additional adjustments to spark the team. Rookie defenseman Carter Yakemchuk, recently called up from Belleville of the American Hockey League, participated in Wednesday's optional skate and represents another option for the lineup.
The Senators' power play has struggled, going 0-for-7 through the first two games with difficulty generating scoring chances. Lassi Thomson played just 13 minutes in his playoff debut on Monday, minutes that Yakemchuk could potentially absorb if inserted into the lineup.
"It'd be great for us," Green said about Kleven's potential return. "He's a good player, smart, big body, physical and skates well. He's a big part of our D corps and has been all year. Whenever we get him back, it will be big for our team."
Must-Win Scenario
With the Senators facing elimination if they lose the next two games, all options remain under consideration. The team's defensive injuries have forced them to overtax their top players, a situation that could become problematic if the series extends beyond four games.
The decision regarding who would exit the lineup if Kleven returns appears to be between Dennis Gilbert and Thomson, both of whom have filled in due to injuries. As Ottawa prepares for what amounts to a must-win situation, Kleven's potential return offers hope for a defensive boost against a formidable Hurricanes opponent.
