Auston Matthews Sets Sights on Olympic Hockey Glory with Team USA in Milan
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is eagerly anticipating his role with the United States men's hockey team at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. The star forward recognizes the immense historical value of the Olympic Games and is preparing to make a significant impact for his country on the international stage.
Childhood Memories Fuel Olympic Aspirations
Matthews vividly recalls a pivotal moment from his youth that ignited his Olympic passion. In February 2014, as a 16-year-old member of the United States national team development program, he found himself captivated by the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. "I remember watching the U.S.-Russia shootout in our lunch room and missing a little bit of my post-lunch period to watch it," Matthews revealed. The tense preliminary-round game required a shootout to decide the outcome, with T.J. Oshie delivering a legendary performance by scoring four shootout goals against Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory for the Americans.
This experience left an indelible mark on the young athlete. "You're pretty aware of the Olympics growing up, but it's always a goal... it only comes every four years," Matthews explained. "The NHL is the thing in the front of your mind when you're coming up and playing junior and minor hockey. But this kind of opportunity is one not many people get and it's a big honor."
Olympic Hockey Returns with NHL Participation
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan will mark the first time since the Sochi Games twelve years ago that National Hockey League players will participate in the Olympic hockey tournament. The men's hockey event commences on February 11th with Finland facing Slovakia and Italy taking on Sweden in preliminary-round matchups. Matthews and Team USA begin their campaign on February 12th against Latvia, while Canada opens against Czechia on the same day.
Matthews gained valuable international experience last February when he captained the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. However, he acknowledges that the Olympic stage operates on an entirely different level. "For everybody, for all the players that were able to compete, for the fans that watched, the 4 Nations tournament whetted the appetite," Matthews noted. "It's just so great for the game to have that aspect of it and bring something new to the watcher and bring something new for the guys that haven't been able to compete in best-on-best formats."
Drawing Inspiration from Olympic History
The rich history of Olympic hockey for the United States is not lost on Matthews. During the 4 Nations event, American players received special inspiration when Mike Eruzione, the hero of the "Miracle on Ice" in 1980, addressed the team at a dinner gathering. Eruzione famously scored the winning goal against the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, New York, leading the United States to an improbable gold medal victory.
"That moment changed a lot for USA Hockey and maybe jump-started a lot of belief that the U.S. could generate great players and compete in stages like the Olympics," Matthews reflected. "I'm still very fond of that movie 'Miracle.' I remember watching it for the first time growing up. Even today, it still gives you chills." Matthews described Eruzione as having "a big personality" and being "a lot of fun to get to know," emphasizing how the Olympic legend shared compelling stories with the current generation of players.
Focus on Creating Lasting Olympic Memories
As the NHL season progresses, Matthews acknowledges that the Olympic experience may represent the highlight of his 2025-26 hockey campaign, regardless of how Team USA performs in Milan. The Americans enter the tournament as gold medal contenders alongside Canada and Sweden. Matthews expressed his desire to create memorable moments similar to those achieved by Eruzione and Oshie in previous Olympic competitions.
"We've still got games left and my focus is on the Leafs, but when you're looking ahead a little bit, it's going to be exciting to be able to play with a lot of great players," Matthews stated. "Privileged to be able to represent your country and go and compete in the Olympics." The Toronto captain's anticipation builds as he prepares to don the Team USA jersey in what promises to be a thrilling showcase of international hockey talent at the highest level.
