Oilers' Colton Dach and Ducks' Olen Zellweger: Childhood Friends Turned NHL Rivals
Oilers' Dach and Ducks' Zellweger: Friends from Fort Saskatchewan

In the intense atmosphere of NHL playoff hockey, a compelling personal story emerges from the Edmonton Oilers' series against the Anaheim Ducks. Oilers winger Colton Dach and Ducks defenseman Olen Zellweger share a remarkable connection that predates their professional careers by many years.

Neighbors Turned NHL Competitors

These two Alberta-born athletes grew up just two doors apart in Fort Saskatchewan, forming a friendship that began in elementary school. Their shared history adds a unique layer to the already fierce playoff rivalry between their respective teams.

"I've known Zelly since grade 6, rode our bikes all around," Dach revealed, reflecting on their childhood connection. The Oilers forward delivered a strong performance in Game 1 of the playoff series, recording eight hits against the Ducks.

Summer Training at Shamrock Curling Club

Despite their current on-ice competition, Dach and Zellweger maintain their friendship during offseason training sessions. They work out together at the old Shamrock Curling Club located near Mill Creek ravine on Edmonton's southside.

"My brother Kirby, Zelly goes there too, a few other NHL players. It's a good little group. We have some laughs, but we get our work done," Dach explained about their summer training routine.

The converted curling facility provides an ideal training environment with a smooth concrete path perfect for shooting practice. However, Dach noted one significant drawback: "Sometimes it sucks because there's no AC in there, so on a hot day we struggle."

Playoff Circumstances Separate Friends

Unfortunately for their personal storyline, Zellweger has been a healthy scratch for the first two playoff games after appearing in 76 regular season contests. This means Dach won't have the opportunity to compete directly against his longtime friend during this series.

"It's always pretty cool to see him, have a giggle and see the smile on his face," Dach said about their occasional NHL encounters, expressing sympathy for Zellweger's current spectator status.

Rookie Josh Samanski Makes Playoff Debut

Another developing story in the Oilers lineup involves rookie center Josh Samanski, who made his NHL playoff debut in Game 2. The German-born player earned his opportunity following an injury to veteran Adam Henrique.

Samanski brings an impressive athletic pedigree to the ice. His father John won an NCAA championship at Bowling Green University before playing professionally in Europe. The Samanski family includes seven children with diverse athletic accomplishments:

  • Five brothers and two sisters all involved in sports
  • Four brothers who have played hockey at various levels
  • One brother who plays professional basketball
  • One sister who competes in dressage riding
  • Another sister who pole vaults at the University of Oklahoma

Samanski prepared for his NHL playoff debut with international experience, having played in Milan during February. He has earned coach Kris Knoblauch's trust through his two-way game and penalty-killing abilities, though his offensive production from Germany (40 points last season) hasn't yet translated to the NHL level.

"Obviously, it's not easy for a coach to trust a young guy, especially one who played in the DEL last year. They're not sure what to expect. I've built my game, taking pride in the D zone, battling for pucks," Samanski explained about his development approach.

The Oilers rookie lines up alongside Dach and winger Trent Frederic on the team's fourth line, bringing energy and defensive responsibility to Edmonton's playoff push.
