Edmonton Oilers Likely Finished Ahead of NHL Trade Deadline

As the NHL trade deadline looms on Friday, the Edmonton Oilers appear to have concluded their major roster moves, according to General Manager Stan Bowman. Speaking to reporters in Edmonton on Thursday afternoon, Bowman provided insights into the team's strategy and recent acquisitions.

Building a Team, Not Just Collecting Players

Bowman emphasized that the Oilers' approach has been focused on constructing a cohesive team rather than simply accumulating individual talent. "We're trying to build a team and not just a collection of players," he stated. "We need some specific players who can fill roles. They all have very specific identities that they bring."

The general manager highlighted several key aspects of their recent moves:

  • Jason Dickinson's defensive abilities: "We like the fact he takes pride in that role and has a very clear job to do and does it very well."
  • Kirby Dach's energy and local connection: "His energy, his style of play—a big kid, those are things you notice about him, strong physical, but also has the ability to score." Bowman added that Dach's role is "to bring some energy to the group, it's important to have that, some excitement, and the fact he's from here is also a great story."
  • Search for a right-shot center: While acknowledging this was a target, Bowman noted, "For sure we talk about that and we search for it. (But) there's more to the game than just faceoffs."

Trade Deadline Status and Future Considerations

When asked directly if the Oilers were finished making moves, Bowman responded, "We'll spend the next 24 hours talking through it, but I expect we're done. But part of our job is to see what's out there, a depth role, something that made sense."

He expressed satisfaction with the team's current position compared to just a week ago: "I sure like our team a lot better today than I did a week ago. Now it's up to the team. I do think we are positioned well now."

Reflections on Recent Transactions

Bowman addressed several specific aspects of the Oilers' recent activity:

  1. Andrew Mangiapane's departure: "We all thought it would and wanted it to and it just didn't. Our team did not get off to the greatest start and in the process he kind of got swept up in that. Once he moved out of there he had a hard time finding a role. A true professional through all of this. It's ultimately on me and I own that."
  2. Asset management: Regarding giving up a first-round pick, Bowman explained, "We'd probably end up paying more in total with multiple trades."
  3. Josh Samanski's situation: "He has come a long way. It's clear that he can play in the league. It's just a matter of if he's going to be playing every night and if not, we'll look at other options."

The Oilers' front office appears confident in their roster construction as the trade deadline approaches, with Bowman's comments suggesting minimal additional activity expected before Friday's cutoff.
