The Ottawa Senators are set to face the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of their first-round NHL playoff series on Thursday night, with defenceman Tyler Kleven returning to the lineup after recovering from a jaw injury.
Kleven, who suffered the injury on April 2 against the Minnesota Wild, underwent surgery and missed eight games. His return provides a significant boost to a Senators team that trails 2-0 in the series and faces a must-win situation at the Canadian Tire Centre.
Kleven's Recovery and Readiness
Coach Travis Green confirmed on Thursday morning that Kleven will pair with Cameron Crotty on the third defence pairing for Game 3. The Senators will scratch Lassi Thomson and Dennis Gilbert for the crucial matchup.
Kleven resumed skating last Friday in a non-contact sweater and has been a full participant in practices since Monday. He will wear a half shield and mouthguard to protect the surgically repaired area, equipment he is familiar with from his time at the University of North Dakota.
“I just have to go out there and play my game,” Kleven said. “I think I can help the team. I just want to play hard to help the team. I’m fired up.”
“I think (the recovery) has been good,” he added. “We’ve done a lot in the gym, and we’ve done everything we can to prepare for this moment.”
Impact on the Series
The Senators are in a precarious position, needing a win to avoid falling into a 3-0 series deficit. Kleven's physical presence and defensive reliability are expected to be key factors in tightening up the team's play.
“Definitely having (Kleven) back is a big plus,” Green said. “He’s a good player for us, he’s a good player in the league and it’s going to help.”
Cameron Crotty's Playoff Debut
Crotty, an Ottawa native, will make his NHL playoff debut in Game 3. The 25-year-old defenceman has only seven games of NHL experience but has impressed the coaching staff with his safe, hard minutes.
“We didn’t take (the decision) lightly,” Green said. “We just like the games that he gave us. He gave us some really safe, hard minutes. Part of it is about who we’re playing to and the style of game that he can bring. I’m really confident that he can get the job done.”
Injury Woes on the Blueline
The Senators have struggled with injuries to their defence corps throughout the season. Veteran blueliner Nick Jensen is out for the year after knee surgery, while Artem Zub remains sidelined after an injury sustained in Game 1. Zub did not participate in the morning skate and has not been seen on the ice for four consecutive days. Green had no update on Zub's status.
With Kleven returning and Crotty stepping in, the Senators hope to stabilize their defence and even the series. Game 3 is set for Thursday night at the Canadian Tire Centre.
