Claude Giroux Returns to Senators on One-Year Deal

Claude Giroux has signed a one-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators, ending speculation about his future and committing to the team for his 20th NHL season. The deal, announced on Tuesday, includes a $2 million base salary and up to $3 million in performance bonuses, with a guarantee of at least $3.5 million if he plays 40 games.

Giroux's Decision to Stay

Giroux, 38, cited his connection to the team as the primary reason for re-signing. "I chose to come back because I want to be here. I’m excited to be an Ottawa Senator," he said. "Being around those guys for four years, we got really close. This team feels like a family."

The veteran forward considered offers from the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Montreal Canadiens. A league executive told the Ottawa Citizen that the Leafs made a "significant" offer, but Giroux ultimately decided to remain in Ottawa.

Impact on the Senators

Giroux's return is crucial for the Senators, who are in "win now" mode after advancing to the playoffs under coach Travis Green for the past two seasons. The team recently traded former captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on June 21, making Giroux's leadership even more vital.

In 327 games with Ottawa since signing as a free agent in 2022, Giroux has recorded 85 goals, 157 assists, and 242 points. Last season, he led the NHL in faceoff win percentage at 63.1%.

Team and Management Reaction

Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios expressed satisfaction with the signing. "Claude took his time to evaluate his options and his decision to re-sign with us shows his belief and commitment to our group," Staios said. "He is the consummate professional and brings veteran experience to our core on and off the ice."

The signing came on the same day the Toronto Maple Leafs hired former Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson as an associate coach, overshadowing the announcement. Nevertheless, Giroux's commitment signals stability for a team looking to build on recent playoff appearances.

Contract Details

Under the terms, Giroux will receive a $1.5 million bonus for playing 10 games and an additional $500,000 for 40 games. Last season, he earned $3 million including bonuses. The contract allows him to continue mentoring young stars like Tim Stutzle, Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, Shane Pinto, Drake Batherson, and Dylan Cozens.

If Giroux had left, it would have been a setback for the Senators, suggesting doubts about the team's ability to win. Instead, his return reinforces the belief that Ottawa can compete for a Stanley Cup.
