On the latest episode of Hot Topics, Postmedia's Rob Wong sat down with Calgary Flames writer Danny Austin to dissect the team's recent acquisition of defenceman Simon Nemec and forward Maxim Tsyplakov from the New Jersey Devils. The discussion also explored potential targets for the Flames' sixth overall pick in Friday's NHL Draft.
Trade Details and Nemec's Role
The Flames acquired Nemec, a 22-year-old Slovakian defenceman, and Tsyplakov in a deal that sent several assets to New Jersey. Nemec, selected second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, has shown promise with the Devils but now faces a new opportunity in Calgary. Austin noted that Nemec's offensive instincts and puck-moving ability could bolster the Flames' blue line, especially on the power play. "He's a high-end talent who needs consistent minutes to develop," Austin said.
Draft Strategy with the Sixth Pick
With the sixth overall selection, the Flames are expected to target a forward or a defenceman depending on who falls. Austin highlighted that the team's prospect pool is deep on defence, so they might lean toward a skilled forward like Cayden Lindstrom or Ivan Demidov. "The draft is deep, and the Flames have options," he added.
The Flames' recent moves signal a shift toward youth, with Nemec and Tsyplakov joining a core of young players. Nemec's adjustment to the Flames' system will be key, as he brings experience from 120 NHL games with the Devils.
