Edmonton Oilers Close to Signing Veteran Defenseman Connor Murphy
Oilers Close to Signing Defenseman Connor Murphy

The Edmonton Oilers are nearing a contract agreement with veteran defenseman Connor Murphy, a big, rugged presence on the blue line. TSN's Ryan Rishaug reported on June 21, 2026, that progress between the two sides has been solid, with a deal potentially finalized within the next day or so.

Rishaug's Report on Negotiations

Rishaug stated: “Sounds like solid progress has been made between Murphy and the Oilers, wouldn’t be surprised to see something get done in the next day or so.” The 33-year-old Murphy, who played for the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 2024, brings a physical, defensive-minded style that could bolster Edmonton's back end.

Murphy's Fit with the Oilers

Murphy, a right-shot defenseman, has earned a reputation as a reliable stay-at-home defender and a strong presence in the locker room. Over his career, he has recorded 186 points in 724 NHL games, along with over 1,200 hits and 1,100 blocked shots. His addition would address the Oilers' need for defensive depth, especially on the right side, where they have lacked a physical, shutdown option.

Impact on Oilers' Roster

The Oilers already have a deep forward group led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but their defense has been a focus for improvement. Adding Murphy would provide a veteran partner for younger defensemen like Evan Bouchard or Philip Broberg, allowing them to play more offensive roles. The deal is expected to be for one or two years at a cap hit around $2.5 million, fitting within Edmonton's salary cap constraints.

More details are expected soon as the Oilers look to finalize the signing before the start of free agency on July 1.
