The Edmonton Oilers have issued qualifying offers to four young players: defenceman Spencer Stastney and forwards Colton Dach, Roby Jarventie, and Owen Michaels, the team announced. This move secures the Oilers' negotiating rights to these prospects as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Colton Dach Expected to Play Bigger Role
Colton Dach, acquired in the Andrew Mangiapane trade that sent Jason Dickinson and a first-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks, showed promise in limited action with the Oilers. According to David Staples of the Edmonton Journal, Dach "seemed like almost an afterthought in that trade, but he showed plenty of promise in his few games with the Oilers, hitting hard and making plays in the attacking zone." The 23-year-old forward is expected to compete for a roster spot after impressing with his physical play and offensive creativity.
Roby Jarventie Returns from Injury
Roby Jarventie, who missed nearly the entire 2024-25 season due to injury, made three appearances for the Oilers last season. He finished fifth in points for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, scoring 23 goals and adding 24 assists in 61 games. Despite signing a two-year deal in the Swiss League in late May, the Oilers opted to retain his NHL rights with a qualifying offer, leaving the door open for a potential return.
Spencer Stastney: A Work in Progress
The Oilers traded a third-round pick to acquire Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators. While some praised his skating early on, Staples noted that Stastney "lacks size, his passing was just OK, and his defensive play was weak." The 24-year-old defenceman did not play in any playoff games last season, but general manager Ken Bowman remains determined to evaluate his potential. Staples commented, "I’m good with the signing so long as the Oilers acquire another left-shot d-man with NHL experience. Going with Stastney as your third-pairing left shot d-man heading into the season is a reach."
Owen Michaels Joins After NCAA Championship
Owen Michaels signed a one-year entry-level contract with the Oilers in early April after captaining Western Michigan University to an NCAA championship. He recorded 13 goals and 13 assists in 39 games. The 22-year-old forward brings leadership and a winning pedigree to the organization.
The qualifying offers ensure the Oilers retain negotiating rights to all four players, with training camp expected to determine their roles for the 2026-27 season.
