SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) has announced a new initiative to provide free cybersecurity training to eligible small businesses and non-profit organizations. The program aims to address the growing threat of cyber attacks targeting smaller entities with limited resources.
Program Details and Eligibility
The training covers essential cybersecurity practices, including threat detection, data protection, and incident response. Eligible participants must be small businesses with fewer than 500 employees or registered non-profits. Courses will be delivered online and in-person at SAIT's campus in Calgary.
According to SAIT officials, the initiative is funded through a partnership with the Canadian government's Cyber Security Cooperation Program. “Small businesses and non-profits are often the most vulnerable to cyber attacks, yet they lack the budget for expensive training,” said Dr. David Ross, SAIT's Dean of Continuing Education. “This program levels the playing field.”
Rising Cyber Threats
Recent statistics show that 43% of cyber attacks target small businesses, and 60% of those attacked go out of business within six months. Non-profits are also frequent targets due to sensitive donor data. The free training aims to reduce these risks by empowering organizations with practical skills.
Courses begin in September 2026 and will run for 12 weeks. Participants who complete the program receive a certificate of completion. Registration opens on July 15, 2026, via SAIT's website.
Community Impact
Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek praised the initiative, stating, “This is a smart investment in our local economy. Cyber resilience is essential for business continuity.” The program is expected to train over 1,000 organizations in its first year.
Interested parties are encouraged to apply early due to limited spots. SAIT plans to expand the program if demand exceeds capacity.
