RCMP in British Columbia have released dashcam footage capturing what they describe as 'dangerous and illegal' motorcycle driving moments before a crash. The incident, which occurred on a highway in the province, underscores ongoing concerns about reckless driving and road safety.
Footage Shows Reckless Manoeuvres
The video, obtained from a police cruiser's dashcam, shows a motorcyclist weaving through traffic at high speed, changing lanes abruptly without signalling, and passing vehicles on the shoulder. According to RCMP, the rider was observed engaging in these behaviours for several minutes before losing control and colliding with another vehicle.
'This type of driving is not only illegal but extremely dangerous for the rider and everyone else on the road,' said RCMP Corporal John Smith in a statement. 'We are releasing this footage to remind the public of the serious consequences of reckless driving.'
Crash and Aftermath
The crash resulted in minor injuries to the motorcyclist, who was transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported. The driver of the struck vehicle was shaken but unharmed. RCMP have not yet laid charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or similar dangerous driving to contact authorities. They also remind motorcyclists to obey traffic laws and prioritize safety.
Broader Context of Motorcycle Safety
This incident comes amid a rise in motorcycle-related crashes in British Columbia. According to ICBC, there were over 2,800 motorcycle crashes in the province in 2024, resulting in 38 fatalities. Speeding and loss of control are leading factors in these collisions.
RCMP emphasize that public awareness and enforcement are key to reducing such incidents. 'We want everyone to arrive safely at their destination,' Corporal Smith added. 'One moment of recklessness can change lives forever.'
