The Fraser Valley Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for properties near an out-of-control wildfire burning close to Boston Bar, British Columbia. The B.C. Wildfire Service reports the blaze, estimated at 0.14 square kilometres in size, is spreading along Chaumox Road near Brunswick Creek and is believed to be human caused.
Evacuation Alert and Road Restrictions
Four properties on Chaumox Road north of North Bend are under evacuation alert, meaning residents must be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Traffic on Chaumox Road is restricted to local residents only, and authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area to allow firefighting crews to operate safely. Highway 1 is not expected to be affected by the fire.
Firefighting Efforts and Challenges
B.C. Wildfire Service crews are assisting the Boston Bar Fire Department in responding to the wildfire. Air support has been limited due to weather and terrain conditions, hampering efforts to contain the fire from above. Fire officials warn that despite a cooler weather pattern moving through the province, temperatures are expected to increase over the weekend, and drought remains a concern. Warmer weather could raise the risk of new fire starts and increased fire behaviour in some areas, including the Chilcotin and Southern Interior.
Smoke and Health Advisory
The wildfire will continue to produce smoke in the area, and the regional district advises residents with health sensitivities to take steps to reduce their exposure. As of Friday evening, there were 19 active wildfires in the province, including three considered out of control. Fire officials urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any new fires immediately.
