A powerful thunderstorm swept through Windsor-Essex on Friday evening, July 3, 2026, bringing intense rain and strong winds that toppled trees and caused widespread power outages across the region.
Storm Warnings and Wind Speeds
Environment Canada issued an orange thunderstorm warning for Windsor-Essex around 7 p.m. Friday, citing conditions favorable for wind gusts between 110 and 129 km/h. The storm affected multiple communities, including Windsor, Tecumseh, LaSalle, Amherstburg, Leamington, and Belle River.
A photograph captured by Derek Spalding of the Windsor Star shows a large tree that fell on Kildare Road near Vimy Avenue in Windsor, blocking the roadway and damaging nearby property.
Essex Fun Fest Impact
Essex Fun Fest announced Friday evening that it would close for the remainder of the day due to what organizers described as “extreme weather conditions.” Videos recorded by attendees showed toppled tents and portable toilets scattered across the festival grounds.
According to a social media post Saturday morning by Fun Fest committee chair Joe Garon, the thunderstorm destroyed several vendor booths and caused thousands of dollars in damage to production equipment. “I was worried for all our vendors, staff and guests who experienced this last night,” Garon wrote. “I don’t recall a storm in the past that came on so quickly – and did so much damage. A special prayer is being said for the few people who did experience injuries and were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
Despite the destruction, Essex Fun Fest confirmed on Saturday that the carnival would resume for the weekend. Friday All-Day ride pass tickets would be honored on Saturday, allowing attendees to enjoy the remaining festivities.
Red Tornado Warning and Heat Advisory
Environment Canada escalated its alert for Chatham-Kent, issuing a Red Tornado Warning at 7:29 p.m. Friday, its highest alert level. The warning was lifted shortly thereafter as the storm moved eastward.
Windsor-Essex remains under a yellow heat warning, with maximum temperatures near 31 degrees Celsius and humidex values in the mid-thirties, according to Environment Canada. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
The storm’s rapid onset and intensity caught many off guard, leaving cleanup crews working through the weekend to remove fallen trees and restore power. Local authorities urge residents to report any downed power lines or hazardous debris to emergency services.
