Whyte Ridge Storm Confirmed as Tornado, Rossburn Rating Upgraded

Environment Canada has confirmed that the severe storm that struck the Whyte Ridge area of Winnipeg on June 30 was a tornado, and has upgraded the rating of the tornado that hit Rossburn earlier in the week. The confirmation comes after damage surveys and analysis of radar data.

The storm in Whyte Ridge, which caused significant damage to homes and trees, has been classified as an EF-1 tornado with estimated peak wind speeds of 135 kilometers per hour. The tornado had a path length of approximately 5 kilometers and a maximum width of 200 meters. Rossburn Tornado Rating Upgrade

Meanwhile, the tornado that struck the community of Rossburn on June 28 has been upgraded from an EF-1 to an EF-2, with wind speeds estimated at 190 kilometers per hour. The upgraded rating reflects more severe damage observed during a detailed survey. The Rossburn tornado had a path length of 15 kilometers and a width of 300 meters, causing extensive damage to several farm buildings and vehicles.

“The damage in Rossburn was more severe than initially assessed,” the meteorologist added. “We have upgraded the rating to EF-2 based on the structural damage observed.”

Impact and Cleanup

In Whyte Ridge, cleanup efforts are underway as residents deal with downed trees and damaged roofs. Manitoba Public Insurance reported receiving over 1,000 claims related to the storm, with many homeowners facing issues with flood coverage. The municipality has set up a temporary debris collection site for affected residents.

In Rossburn, the upgraded tornado rating has implications for insurance claims and disaster assistance. The provincial government has announced that it will provide financial support to affected farmers and homeowners. “We are working with local officials to ensure that those impacted receive the help they need,” said a spokesperson for Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization.

Weather Patterns and Warnings

The severe weather event is part of a larger pattern of thunderstorms that swept through southern Manitoba over the past week. Environment Canada had issued tornado warnings for several areas, including Whyte Ridge, prior to the storm. The agency reminds residents to stay alert during severe weather and to have a plan in place.
