Dan McLean, the iconic face and voice of CHCH News for nearly 40 years, has passed away at the age of 78. The station reported the news, confirming his family's announcement.
A Storied Career in Broadcasting
McLean began his broadcast news career at just 15 years old with a part-time radio position in Welland. He worked across Ontario and briefly in Saskatchewan before returning to Ontario and eventually joining CHCH, where he spent 37 years. He anchored midday and nightly news until his retirement in December 2008.
Known for his baritone voice, sharp style, and impeccable on-air appearance, McLean was a trusted name for local news in Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara. He was also a mentor to many up-and-coming journalists.
A Man Who Gave Back
McLean was deeply dedicated to the Hamilton community. As part of the CHCH team, he helped raise millions for McMaster Children's Hospital and other charities. His professional and personal work earned him numerous awards, including the Queen's Jubilee Medal and an RTDNA Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001, he was named Hamilton's Citizen of the Year, an honor he said he was most proud of.
During his final broadcast, McLean reflected: 'It has always been my belief that you should give what you get, and this community has been exceptional to me and my family, and I'm very appreciative of that.'
McLean's legacy as a professional, community-minded anchor will be remembered fondly by many.
