A 23-year-old woman from Brampton has been charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Waterloo. The incident occurred on June 28, 2026, according to Waterloo Regional Police.
Police responded to a call in the area of Weber Street and University Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered a woman who became combative. During the interaction, the woman allegedly struck an officer, causing minor injuries.
Details of the Incident
The accused, identified as Maya Patel, was arrested at the scene. She faces charges including assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest. The injured officer was treated at a local hospital and released.
“Our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep our community safe,” said Staff Sergeant David Chen of Waterloo Regional Police. “We will not tolerate violence against those who serve and protect.”
Legal Proceedings
Patel was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on July 10, 2026. Police have not disclosed the nature of the original call that led to the incident.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about assaults on police officers. According to Statistics Canada, there were over 2,000 reported assaults on police officers in Ontario in 2025, a 5% increase from the previous year.
