Windsor Police Launch Investigation into City's First Homicide of 2026

Windsor police have initiated a major investigation into what has been confirmed as the city's first homicide of the year. The case unfolded early Wednesday morning when officers discovered an unconscious and injured man outside Windsor Regional Hospital's Metropolitan campus.

Discovery at Hospital Parking Lot

Police responded to the hospital location shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, where they found the victim in a parking lot area. The man was unconscious when discovered by responding officers and was subsequently transported to the hospital's emergency department, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as a 44-year-old Windsor resident, though police have not released his name publicly as of Wednesday morning. Authorities declined to specify the exact nature of the fatal injuries during their initial public statements.

Neighborhood Investigation Underway

Officers from the Windsor Police Service major crimes unit have taken charge of the investigation, which remains in its preliminary stages. Police canvassed the surrounding neighborhood early Wednesday, knocking on doors in the 2200 block of Kildare Road, located immediately west of the hospital.

A resident in that area reported that an officer visited his home around 7 a.m. seeking information about any unusual activity. "He said somebody dropped somebody off at the hospital with either a bullet wound or a stab wound," the homeowner told investigators when asked about potential witnesses or unusual occurrences.

Evidence Collection Efforts

Investigators are actively seeking security video surveillance footage from the area surrounding the hospital. Officers conducting door-to-door inquiries specifically requested access to any available video recordings that might capture relevant activity during the early morning hours.

The Windsor Police Service major crimes unit is leading what they describe as a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death. This marks the first confirmed homicide in Windsor for the 2026 calendar year.

Public Assistance Requested

Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to contact the major crimes unit directly at 519-255-6700, extension 4830. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be submitted through Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477 (TIPS) or through their online reporting system.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the man's fatal injuries and his subsequent arrival at the hospital parking lot.
