Failed Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt unleashed a five-and-a-half-minute rant on Saturday, targeting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani with accusations of communism. The video, staged in the ruins of his Pacific Palisades home destroyed in last year's wildfires, shows Pratt wearing a shirt that read 'anti socialists social club' as he criticized Mamdani's Fourth of July speech marking America's 250th anniversary.
Pratt's Accusations and the Mayor's Speech
In the video, Pratt called Mamdani a 'vile commie' and accused him of trying to 'rewrite history.' He raged, 'We all had to sit and watch that vile, commie mayor sit on the wrong side of our founding father's desk to try to lecture us about our own history.' Mamdani's speech, delivered from a desk once owned by President George Washington and surrounded by 10 newly naturalized citizens, rebuked anti-immigration stances and outlined an inclusive vision of patriotism.
Mamdani explained, 'Patriotism has never been about pretending our nation is without flaws,' adding that love for one's country motivates calls for higher moral standards. Despite this, Pratt, a registered Republican who came third in the June nonpartisan primary for LA mayor, accused Mamdani of believing in an 'evil, anti-human religion' of communism and attempting to 'demoralize people' and 'detach them from their society.'
Political Context and Backlash
Pratt's comments follow a wave of democratic socialist and progressive primary wins, inciting bipartisan uproar over a perceived leftward shift in Democratic politics. After losing to incumbent Karen Bass and democratic socialist Nithya Raman, Pratt and other conservatives baselessly claimed the election process was rigged. The video highlights ongoing tensions over patriotism and immigration in American political discourse.
