The New Jersey Devils have traded defenseman Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames for three high draft picks, the teams announced Wednesday. The deal sends the 22-year-old Slovak blueliner to Calgary in exchange for a first-round pick in 2026, a second-round pick in 2027, and a conditional third-round pick in 2028.
Nemec's Career and Impact
Nemec, selected second overall by the Devils in the 2022 NHL Draft, has played 120 games over three seasons with New Jersey, recording 8 goals and 35 assists. He was a key part of the Devils' defensive core but became expendable as the team looks to reshape its roster. According to Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, "This trade allows us to stockpile assets for future moves while giving Simon a fresh start."
The Flames acquire a young, right-shot defenseman with significant upside. Nemec is expected to slot into Calgary's top four immediately, bringing puck-moving ability and strong defensive instincts. Flames GM Craig Conroy said, "Simon is a talented player who fits our long-term plans. We're excited to add him to our group."
Draft Pick Details
The first-round pick in 2026 is unprotected, giving the Devils a chance at a high selection if the Flames struggle. The second-round pick in 2027 is also unprotected, while the third-round pick in 2028 becomes a second-rounder if Nemec plays 60 games for Calgary in the 2027-28 season. This structure provides New Jersey with flexibility in upcoming drafts.
The trade marks a significant move for both teams as they prepare for the 2026-27 season. The Devils gain valuable draft capital to address other needs, while the Flames add a proven young defenseman to their roster.
