The Calgary Flames made a significant splash in the trade market on Tuesday, acquiring defenceman Simon Nemec and right-winger Maksim Tsyplakov from the New Jersey Devils, according to multiple reports. The deal comes just three days before the 2026 NHL Draft.
Trade Details and Key Assets
In exchange for Nemec and Tsyplakov, the Flames sent a 2027 first-round pick originally belonging to the Vegas Golden Knights, a 2028 first-round pick originally belonging to the Colorado Avalanche, the No. 35 overall pick in the 2026 NHL draft, and the rights to prospect defenceman Etienne Morin to the Devils.
Nemec, 22, is the centerpiece of the deal. Selected second overall by the Devils in the 2022 NHL Draft, the Slovakian defenceman is coming off a season where he recorded 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points in 68 games. Tsyplakov, a 27-year-old Russian winger, adds depth and physicality to the Flames' forward group.
Impact on Calgary's Roster
The acquisition of Nemec gives the Flames a young, top-pairing defenceman with significant upside. His offensive production from the blue line addresses a key need for Calgary, which has been seeking to bolster its defence corps. Tsyplakov provides additional scoring punch and experience, having played in the NHL and KHL.
According to reports, the Flames are betting on Nemec's development to anchor their defence for years to come. The trade signals a win-now mentality for Calgary, which is looking to build on its recent playoff appearances.
Devils' Perspective
For the Devils, moving Nemec allows them to acquire significant future assets, including two first-round picks and a high second-rounder. The Devils also add Morin, a promising defensive prospect who was a third-round pick of the Flames in 2024. This trade gives New Jersey flexibility to continue building around their core of young stars.
More details are expected to emerge as the trade becomes official. The Flames and Devils are both expected to address the media later this week.
