Port Coquitlam Brewery Disappointed Over FIFA Watch Party Denial

Patina Brewing in Port Coquitlam is expressing disappointment after FIFA denied its request to host a World Cup watch party. The brewery had planned to screen matches for the 2026 tournament, which Vancouver is co-hosting, but was told it could not do so without an official FIFA license.

Brewery's Plans Dashed

Owner Mike Kelly said he was surprised by the decision, noting that many other venues in the region are hosting similar events. “We were really looking forward to bringing the community together for the World Cup,” Kelly said. “It’s a huge event, and we thought it would be a great opportunity for our customers.”

The brewery had already invested in additional seating and a large screen for the event. Kelly estimates the denial could cost the business thousands of dollars in potential revenue.

FIFA's Licensing Rules

FIFA requires any public screening of World Cup matches to be officially licensed, which often involves fees and restrictions on advertising and sponsorship. According to FIFA’s guidelines, unauthorized screenings can lead to legal action. The organization has been known to enforce these rules strictly during past tournaments.

Kelly said he was not given a specific reason for the denial, but suspects it may be due to the brewery’s size or location. “We’re a small craft brewery, not a big sports bar,” he said.

Community Reaction

Local residents and regulars have expressed disappointment on social media. Some have called on the city to intervene, while others have suggested alternative venues. The City of Port Coquitlam has not commented on the matter.

Patina Brewing is now considering other options, such as hosting private events or non-World Cup screenings. “We’ll find a way to make it work,” Kelly said. “It’s just disappointing that we can’t be part of the World Cup excitement.”
