Police Hunt for Third Suspect in Deadly Home Invasion
Montreal police have launched a manhunt for a third individual connected to a violent home invasion that occurred in the early hours of last Friday. The incident, which took place in an east-end apartment, resulted in one man being shot dead and another wounded, leaving investigators to unravel whether the shooting was a criminal act or an act of self-defence.
Uncertainty Surrounds Fatal Shooting
While initial reports characterized the event as a homicide, police authorities clarified on Monday that the investigation remains open. Constable Jean-Pierre Brabant stated that all possibilities are being considered. "Right now all hypotheses are on the table," Brabant said. "Is it a case of murder or self-defence? We're still trying to determine that."
According to police, the event unfolded as an apparent home invasion that escalated into a physical altercation between the suspects and the two occupants of the apartment on Théodore Street, near Ontario Street.
Timeline of a Violent Night
The sequence of events began when police received a 911 call at approximately 1 a.m. on Friday reporting a person injured by gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unconscious 21-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his upper body. A firearm and spent shell casings were also found at the scene.
The victim was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. In a separate development, a 17-year-old male arrived at a local hospital about 15 minutes after the initial shooting. He was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Although he was initially in critical condition, he is now expected to survive.
The two apartment occupants, a 38-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, are cooperating with investigators. The woman was treated at a hospital for a minor injury to her hand. Notably, no charges have been filed against the occupants at this stage of the investigation.
Police believe the third suspect, who was not present inside the apartment when the shooting started, may possess crucial information that could shed light on the exact circumstances of the confrontation. The search for this individual continues as Montreal police work to piece together the events of that fatal morning.
